cool Schools

Do you go to, teach at or know of a cool school that our Student Body should know about?

Email us any awesome details here. Pictures and video are way cool too!

Carl-Bolle Elementary School (Berlin-Moabit, Germany)

Development of language skills and physical activity are the focus at Carl Bolle Elementary School,
a sports-oriented school located in the troubled urban distict of Berlin–Moabit in Germany.
The school was originally designed in 1903 but the ground floor was converted to a leisure area
from 2006-2008. Taking a page from a children’s spy story, various spaces were created to promote
communication, movement and investigation via listening areas, reading retreats and climbing walls.
The spaces allow students to explore scientific phenomena in playful, interactive environments.

We LOVE the inclusion of Spy Vs. Spy in this diagram!

Grey Towers Castle of Arcadia University (Glenside, Pennsylvania)

No, it’s not Hogwarts…it’s Grey Towers Castle on the Arcadia University campus. The castle
was built starting in 1893 as the estate of William Welsh Harrison, and was acquired by the
university in 1929. The castle is rumored to have secret passages behind the fireplaces as well as
a series of underground tunnels built to connect the main house to stables and outbuildings.
It now contains various offices, including that of the President, as well as student residences.
Do you think this university gets an unusual number of applications from die-hard Potter fans?

Daltonschool: The Shipping Container School (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Constructed as a temporary solution while a permanent kindergarten was being built,
Daltonschool takes the idea of the miserable trailer classroom and gives it a bold new
look by stacking the shipping containers and giving them a vibrant coat of paint.

Architects in Amsterdam have shown increased interest in using shipping containers
as inhabitable space for many years due to their low cost and high abundance.

Victorian College of the Arts School of Drama (Melbourne, Australia)

Most of the buildings at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia
are stately and historic. Then, you come across the façade of the School of Drama,
designed by Castles Stephenson + Turner Pty Ltd / Edmond & Corrigan. The unique,
colorful design makes it clear that this is a place of creativity.

Achievement First Endeavor Middle School (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn)
A CHARTER SCHOOL FOR GRADES 5–8

Supported by the Robin Hood Foundation, Achievement First seeks to put kids in urban areas
on the path to a college education. In partnership with Rogers Marvel architects, Paula Scher
and her team at Pentagram developed the school’s environmental graphics based on the school’s

foundation of character building and a series of motivational slogans used by the school’s teachers.
The budget-minded design relied on paint and color as a primary design tool. Now THAT’S cool.
